The SPRINTER Project continues to advance the integration of photonic and wireless technologies through a joint experimental campaign carried out by project partners Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute HHI and Intracom Telecom.

Presented in the new “From Light to mmWave” video, the experimental campaign showcases an important step towards SPRINTER’s vision of flexible, high-capacity communication networks that combine the advantages of optical and millimetre-wave technologies.

A central objective of SPRINTER is the development of hybrid free-space optical (FSO) and mmWave transceivers, designed to provide high-speed wireless connectivity while increasing the flexibility and reliability of industrial networks. By enabling communication to move between optical and mmWave technologies, the SPRINTER architecture is being developed to maintain connectivity even under challenging and dynamic conditions.

Within the project, Fraunhofer HHI contributes its expertise in photonic integration, high-speed optical components and hybrid photonic technologies, while Intracom Telecom provides expertise and solutions for E-band wireless transmission, including RF and baseband technologies for high-capacity mmWave links.

The joint campaign demonstrates how these complementary technologies can be brought together at system level, supporting SPRINTER’s broader goal of developing reliable, energy-efficient and adaptable communication infrastructure for next-generation smart factories and Industry 5.0 applications.

This collaboration marks another important step towards the integration and validation of SPRINTER technologies in increasingly realistic network scenarios.
